In 2004, when Youtube hadn’t exploded yet, video game criticism was reserved for professional publications. Often the opinion of such publications was fundamentally different from the opinion of the players and the industry lacked appreciation from the gaming community itself with all its honesty, which smashed the objectionable to smithereens and erected monuments to their favorites.

One of the progenitors of the «home» game review was the American James Rolf, known to everyone as Angry Video Game Nerd. The moment James picked up the gamepad, it was like Dr. Jekyll from his most hated game, he suddenly turned into a completely different person, into an angry, annoyed Nerd, lamenting about games that are already two decades old.

Glasses, trousers and a white shirt with handles in the breast pocket. He looks like he just got back from a hard day at the office. The nerd sits down to play and drink, trying to ease the pain of the insane complexity and crooked levels of old-school games. He screams, smashes cartridges in a rage, and skillfully builds the most sophisticated and lengthy insults.

The image was liked by the entire Internet and Angry Video Game Nerd gained cult status in a matter of years. What James started as a joke soon determined his fate for the next ten years.

James’s love for creativity and, especially, cinematography was born thanks to his parents, who first gave him an audio recorder, and then the famous Super 8 eight-millimeter camera. took his first reviews.

But he found his real life calling a little later. 1996, sitting in his room, sixteen-year-old James is dying of boredom and the thought that he will have to spend the whole weekend like this does not give him rest. A video camera catches your eye, and the idea comes by itself — why not make your own film … alone. James has always had a “if you want to do something, do it yourself” mentality, so such a task did not frighten him at all. Being a passionate fan of any horror films, by this point James had already managed to shoot several scary short videos, but he still remained a green novice in this business and never planned to take directing seriously.

Of the equipment, James had only a simple video camera and a few masks left over from Halloween nights. Throughout the weekend, he filmed scene after scene, composing the story as he went. James’s ambition and effort paid off and he proudly introduced A Night of Total Terror to his friends. Immediately, a couple of three people were added to the film crew of James, and the filming process became much easier. There were no more doubts, and James decided to closely connect his life with cinema.

In subsequent school years, James shot short films one after another, approaching the matter more seriously and consciously. After leaving school, the passion did not disappear anywhere, and at the age of nineteen, James decides to enter the Philadelphia University of the Arts.

“I didn’t do cinema with thoughts of future wealth. It was a very personal and emotional way for me to express myself through the combination of images and sound.”

At the university, he studied the art of directing and even thought about a possible career as an animator, having taken the appropriate courses.

It was also during this period that James began running his own website, Cinemassacre.com, which would later become the home page of his Cinemassacre Productions company. In its early years, the site was more of a blog with footage of James’ work.

As for the unusual name, it combines both his main passion — «Cinema», and his life principle — «Massacre» (massacre).

As if eight years ago, James feels a promising boredom and decides to make a joke to review two of his least favorite childhood games — Castlevania 2: Simon’s Quest and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. If in the first video we hear only the voiceover of James, then in the review on Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde James first appears on the screen in a familiar image. The video was recorded on VHS, distributed to friends and for some time was forgotten.

James’s life began to settle down. After a hateful job as a loader in a liquor store, he got a job as an editor in an industrial company. This was followed by a new apartment, a new car and a new girlfriend.

Things got even better when Youtube blossomed in 2006 with 100 million views a day. A solid part of the views began to go to James, who listened to the advice of his friend Mike Mathey, who would later become a big part of Cinemassacre. James started a Youtube channel and uploaded the first two episodes of AVGN there.

After that, he recorded a review of The Karate Kid as the missing part of a trilogy of reviews. To his surprise, the audience more than liked it, and James decided to continue.

After a review on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the project really took off. The fan base grew by leaps and bounds. Art and covers of AVGN’s title theme song, performed by Kyle Justin, rained down like a rapid waterfall.

At first, the project was called Angry Nintendo Nerd, but soon the name had to be changed. One of the reasons was potential copyright issues, but the main thing is that the range of games that could theoretically annoy Nerd was huge and far beyond Nintendo. Over time, games on the Atari 2600, Sega Dreamcast, Sega Genesis, and others fell under the sight of Nerd.

First money

2007 was a golden year of change for James. Up until this point, he’d been uploading videos to Youtube and Cinemassacre with no income other than a growing fan base. The whole project was based on pure enthusiasm, which was just beginning to end.

But by chance, it was at this time that the MTV portal GameTrailers.com bought out James offered a one-year contract for twenty-four episodes, implying the release of two episodes per month. On the one hand, this caused confusion in the minds of freshly baked fans. After all, now the releases could only be viewed on GameTrailers, while only trailers were posted on Youtube. But on the other hand, James finally began to receive money for his work. To celebrate, he moved into a larger apartment, on the advice of his wife, he left his job and concentrated on AVGN.

Fans, meanwhile, continued to shower James with gifts, among which, in addition to a lot of game cartridges, were numerous copies of Sega Saturns and other consoles. A year later, his collection outgrew his new room, and he signed a new one-year contract in 2008 to move to an even bigger location, finally giving AVGN a room of its own.

It was around this time that James’s legendary front line confrontation began with another Internet celebrity, Doug Walker, better known as Nostalgia Critic. Walker, who appeared on Youtube just a year later, was dissatisfied with the comparison of himself with Nerd and spoke about it more than once on his blog. Both figures challenged each other to review this or that thing and even met in real life at the signing of autographs by James. The confrontation culminated in an epic mock fight in Nerd’s apartment, in which the latter won.

In 2010, after three years of contracts and almost a hundred episodes behind him, something happened that should have happened. James burned out. Anyway, he’s been involved with AVGN and other projects for six years now, and it’s starting to weigh heavily. James felt that he was starting to compromise on quality and decided to take a break.

A month later, he returned with a new one-year contract and announced that he would no longer release episodes more than once a month. The decision did not harm the project at all, rather the opposite. The period is notable for the release of some of its most epic episodes, including the anniversary review on the ROB controller (the first episode filmed in 16:9 resolution). But most importantly, James had time for his cherished dream…

Since childhood, James dreamed of making a feature film, which would be something more than a set of scenery in a garage. At the end of the Spielberg Games episode, fans discovered a cliffhanger hinting at the release of Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie.

After the success of AVGN in 2006, Rolf began writing a feature film with his childhood friend Kevin Finn, centering on Nerd and one of the most failed video games of all time, ET the Extra Terrestrial.

But the more popular AVGN became, the less time was devoted to the preparation of the film. From 2007 to 2010, several script revisions were made, but things did not go any further.

When, finally, James adjusted the contract, he had a long-awaited free time. She and Finn immediately began trying to launch the project and were negotiating with sponsors. Alas, to no avail.

An army of loyal fans came to the rescue. A fundraiser was launched for the film’s production and instead of the required $75,000, AVGN fans showed true love by raising $325,000.

2012 for James is the year of the fulfillment of a childhood dream and at the same time one of the most difficult periods in his life. Taking his wife and cats in his arms, he went to Los Angeles for a month-long shoot. Part of the filming took place in the desert and for James, new to a project of this magnitude, it was a disaster.

Brandon Amelot (Principal Assistant Director) recalls: “When the wind picked up, it was impossible to talk to a person more than a meter away. Because of the wind, we lost a lot of food, sheds, equipment. Everything was covered with sand and dust. Several members of the team became seriously ill.»

The guys quickly realized that they swung at a too epic debut with a huge amount of visual effects. But no one was going to back down.

In general, the shooting went well, but it was not possible to shoot a lot of things. A protracted two-year period began to finalize the film. Special effects, editing, some scenes had to be filmed. For a month, the whole process had to be suspended due to the birth of James’s daughter.

Finally, in July 2014, the premiere screening of Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie was held at the famous Hollywood cinema Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre. Critics were not very positive about the film, but noted the scale and ambition of the project.

AVGN Adventures

By the way, while James continued to polish his film masterpiece, another pleasant event happened — in 2013, AVGN Adventures was released — Rolf’s first official personalized video game developed by Freakzone Games. Not many can boast even one game built around their persona. Counting the unofficial ones, James Rolfe already has nine of them.

The most prominent are AVGN Adventures and AVGN II: ASSimilation released on PC, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS in 2013 and 2016 respectively. The games are entirely based on references to the series. Suddenly falling platforms, bosses from AVGN episodes and insane difficulty! In fact, Nerd finds himself in his worst nightmare — inside the game, which contains everything that he hates so much.

Currently, James continues to release AVGN reviews, but this time without the help of GameTrailers. James releases an episode about once every few months without any kind of schedule. He has already crossed off the film and the personalized game from the list of goals and is now considering how to please himself and others next time. Theory

Any operating system is allowed to use all benchmarks (Windows 10, 8/8.1, 7, Vista, XP), the exception is SuperPi32M (Stage 2), which can only be run under Windows 7/XP, the reason can be found here. Unfortunately, server hardware and engineering samples cannot be used for testing.

Each participant can submit only one test result. Verification requires the latest CPU-Z and GPU-Z programs with the obligatory use of competition wallpapers on the Desktop.

As for the requirements for formatting the results, the screenshot should have the following CPU-Z tabs:

  • CPU;
  • Mainboard;
  • Memory;
  • SPD.

If this is a 3D benchmark, then you need to add the GPU-Z utility, and the SPD / Mainboard windows from CPU-Z can be neglected.

To get the best result, there is no need to do many different optimizations, just select “Benchmark type — x64” in the benchmark itself, and set Priority — Realtime. SuperPI 32M

The following test is used for solutions based on the Intel LGA1155 platform. Download link.

SuperPi is a very specific benchmark, and it has an incredible amount of optimization techniques, but for beginners, it’s best to just go through it as is.

We start the program and select test 32M. At the end of it, a window will appear with the inscription “Pi calculation is done”, do not close it, otherwise the benchmark will return to the main menu, and then the result will not be opened again, and you will have to start all over again! Naturally, we take a screenshot after opening all the necessary CPU-Z windows.

The benchmark uses two cores, basically the final result is highly dependent on the maximum clock speed of the processor. The test package is here. No restrictions, just use any AMD graphics card (ATI-labeled solutions are not suitable). To this benchmark, be sure to add a link to the Futuremark online verification (just click «Compare results online» after passing the test, and save the link). The final result is affected not only by the frequency of the processor, but also by the number of cores.

Link to the program. The limitations of this benchmark are quite specific, all types of AMD processors for the FM2/FM2+ and AM3+ platform, as well as the K10 architecture (Phenom II, Athlon II), are allowed, but FM1, AM2+ and older socket solutions are not suitable.

For the correct operation of the program, you must download the AMD APP SDK library, as well as Visual C ++ 2012 and 2013.

If you are using Windows 10/8, you will most likely encounter a startup error again. To solve it, you need to write the same command in the console as an administrator bcdedit /set useplatformclock yes and reboot. Then the benchmark will work correctly.

The model under consideration will be the first Gigabyte product in our laboratory since the announcement of the 200th series of chipsets. It has basic capabilities, of the additional controllers there is only ASM2142, which brings two latest-generation USB sockets to the rear panel, which means that today it will be possible to fully concentrate on the manufacturer’s innovations. The «K» in the model name helps identify the network controller as the latest version of the Qualcomm Atheros Killer adapter.

The profiles of the radiators are not too complex and bulky, I was able to install the cooling system without any problems.

The stabilizer has been noticeably strengthened. If earlier there were only two power elements in each “phase”, now only a trio of integrated GPUs use such a scheme. And the four channels of the CPU cores have three elements each (12 pieces in total). We used the new Intersil Corporation ISL95866 PWM controller. It has three built-in drivers, four more can be counted on the board itself. As assemblies, we used ON Semiconductor NTMFS4C10N (everywhere one element) and NTMFS4C06N (two for the CPU, one for each GPU channel).

The radiators are fixed by means of spring-loaded plastic clips. They did not save on the area of ​​the gasket that transfers heat.

At the back, eight USB outputs of various types are successfully located, with a sufficient distance relative to neighboring elements. There are two digital video outputs and six audio outputs. The Polish company associates the release of the latest innovations with the rebranding of the Iridium line, which until recently included Iridium Pro solid-state drives, which, according to the manufacturer, should become a powerful international brand for gamers and demanding users. Test configuration

The memory was overclocked on a system with the following configuration:

  • processor: Intel Core i7-6700K (4.0 GHz);
  • motherboard: ASUS Maximus VIII Formula (Intel Z170);
  • video card: Gigabyte GV-N770OC-2GD (GeForce GTX 770);
  • Cooler: Prolimatech Megahalems;
  • storage: Kingston SSDNow UV400 480GB (480GB, SATA 6Gb/s);
  • power supply: Seasonic X-650 (650 W).

Testing was carried out in the Windows 10 x64 environment. To check the stability of overclocking modules for 15 minutes, the LinX 0.6.5 program was used, the amount of memory in which was set at 4096 MB.

The overclocking potential was found out with timings 15-16-16-39 and 16-17-17-39, selected empirically, the Command Rate was always equal to 1T. The maximum possible mode of memory operation was determined.

This is perhaps the first memory kit that could not conquer the 3000 MHz mark. The maximum mode we managed to achieve from the new GoodRAM is 2800 MHz. Above this value, it was not possible to obtain. Neither the timings nor the increase in voltage led to anything. Even the eight-layer fiberglass used in the production of printed circuit boards did not help.

In addition to finding out the frequency potential, it was decided to add testing in the synthetic benchmark Cache & Memory benchmark of the AIDA64 utility to the memory review, which will allow us to evaluate the positive or negative side of overclocking. The frequency of the processor and its cache was 4 GHz.

The GoodRAM IR-2400D464L15S/16GDC kit from the new IRDM series from a Polish company can be called a quite good solution for building an entry-level and mid-level gaming system. Due to its spectacular appearance, it will fit into PCs with “gaming” motherboards made in red and black style, and other products of the IRDM line will have a place in such machines. Fans of free megahertz will also be satisfied due to the possibility of overclocking memory up to 2800 MHz. But demanding users may not appreciate the novelty, since the memory potential leaves much to be desired against the background of some competitive solutions, and even more expensive models. Perhaps the most interesting manufacturer has stocked up for the IRDM Pro and IRDM Ultimate series. Whether this is so, we will try to find out soon.

Let’s find out which graphics accelerators allow you to play at maximum graphics quality. Let’s compare a group of AMD and NVIDIA video cards in three resolutions.

The list of test participants is as follows:

The GeForce GTX 1050 and Radeon RX 560 are represented by the MSI Aero series models, which will be discussed in detail in a separate review shortly. The Radeon R9 270X and Radeon R9 270 replace the predecessor Radeon HD 7870. All graphics cards were brought to standard frequencies in order to match the reference solutions of their series as closely as possible. The Radeon RX Vega 64 started with the stock BIOS in normal balanced mode, which is active by default. All participants are tested in overclocking.

The test bench configuration is as follows:

For testing, an identical sequence of actions was performed, which combines the use of magic and a walk through a detailed village. The procedure is shown below.

All low-end representatives of NVIDIA demonstrate 40 fps and above; among AMD representatives, only the Radeon R9 270X succeeds. The new Radeon RX 560 video adapter shows the lowest results, losing more than 16% to the GeForce GTX 1050. The latter turns out to be as close as possible to the results of the GeForce GTX 960. In the middle class, the Radeon RX 580, Radeon RX 480 and GeForce GTX 780 Ti have similar results. A few percent faster than the GeForce GTX 1060. Unexpectedly, the Radeon RX Vega 64 accelerator performed poorly, which is associated with incomplete GPU loading at low resolutions. With increasing load with increasing resolution, this problem is leveled, and Vega shows a smaller gap with the competitor in the face of the GeForce GTX 1080.

Overclocking will not be superfluous for younger video cards. GeForce GTX 960 at higher frequencies easily overcomes 50 fps. The GeForce GTX 1050 and GeForce GTX 950 also approach this level, along with the Radeon R9 270X. The accelerated Radeon RX 560 delivers 40 fps.

The video memory load in the test scene is about 1.8 GB, and in general the game will have enough 2 GB for the usual Full HD format. More memory will be required at higher resolutions.

Let’s look at the capabilities of older video adapters at a resolution of 2560×1440.

The results of the Radeon RX 580, Radeon RX 480 and GeForce GTX 780 Ti are about the same, and the GeForce GTX 1060 still holds a slight advantage of a few percent. All of them provide good frame rates, approaching 60 fps when overclocked. The GeForce GTX 1080 is confidently leading. Radeon RX Vega 64 is in second place. The lag behind the NVIDIA flagship for the newcomer AMD is already smaller, but still large — from 16% in average fps to 22% in minimum.

The final test for top-end graphics cards will be testing in 4K mode with maximum graphics quality.

In the hardest mode, the difference between the flagships is reduced to 7-13%. The GeForce GTX 1080 has the best performance, overclocking increases them by 12-13%. Radeon RX Vega 64 due to overclocking compensates for the lag behind the competitor with initial frequencies. The video memory load in the test scene is still less than 3 GB.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 has excellent modern graphics and a very beautiful picture for an isometric game. Modern budget graphics cards can provide Ultra-quality at 1920×1080, but not all of them produce comfortable frame rates. More than 40 fps will be provided by the GeForce GTX 1050, the results will be even better on the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti or with the old GeForce GTX 960. The lowest performance is for the Radeon RX 560, the economic versions, whose core frequencies are below 1200 MHz, will be especially bad. The GeForce GTX 1060 is more powerful than the Radeon RX 580, but the difference between them is not critical, both rivals allow you to play even at a resolution of 2560×1440. It is worth noting the good results of the old flagship GeForce GTX 780 Ti, which is only 8-10% weaker than the GeForce GTX 1060 and no worse than the Radeon RX 480.

The GeForce GTX 1080 delivers maximum performance at high frame rates. The rival Radeon RX Vega 64 is seriously behind the leader in simple modes, but as the resolution increases, the gap is significantly reduced. As a result, both video adapters adequately cope with 4K resolution.

Overclocking and comparison of processors. Part I: AMD Solutions — Ryzen 7, Ryzen 5, Ryzen 3, and FX-6100


For almost a year, processors of the Zen microarchitecture have been on the market, on which AMD has high hopes. Five years of development should have finally brought the company out of the position in which it found itself after the release of Intel’s Core family solutions. A timid attempt to rectify the situation back in 2011 by the Bulldozer architecture did not lead to anything — FX processors were highly dependent on software support: showing excellent performance in multi-threaded applications, they were losing ground in single-threaded, i.e. in games. But, despite another failure on the processor front, the chipmaker decided not to stop and set about developing completely new solutions.

The new products promised a redesigned memory controller and support for the DDR4 standard, an increase in the specific performance of each core, a change in cluster multithreading technology (CMT) to simultaneous multithreading (SMT) — such steps were supposed to increase the speed of processors by 40% compared to their predecessors. And the fans began to look forward to another miracle. And, to tell the truth, their expectations were justified. Zen microarchitecture processors were able to occupy almost all market niches, including high-level and server segments, where AMD’s position has long been shaken. This also had an impact on the confrontation with her opponent, who urgently released a new generation of mid-range CPUs and expanded their lineup by adding six-core products, which had never happened before.

In addition to good performance, without exception, all Ryzen processors have an unlocked multiplier, which makes them more attractive in the eyes of enthusiasts than some competing Intel solutions. It is enough to select a suitable multiplier with a couple of movements in the firmware of the motherboard and run the chip at a frequency higher than the nominal one, thereby increasing the system performance. To do the same with the opponent’s products, you need to choose certain processors belonging to the «K» series, the prices of which are much higher than simple solutions, and the choice is limited to several models. And here AMD is clearly out of competition. But is it so easy to overclock Ryzen and what will it give against the background of products of the opposite camp, we will try to find out in a series of our reviews.

The lineup

So, in the range of available desktop CPUs of the Ryzen family, there are nine models: three Ryzen 7 series, four Ryzen 5 and two Ryzen 3. The older ones differ in the number of cores, which is eight pieces with multithreading support, the middle ones have 4/6 cores, also with SMT , and the younger line is content with only four cores without the ability to process multiple threads per clock. In addition, Ryzen 7 and older Ryzen 5 models have 16 MB of L3 cache on board, while the rest have only 8 MB. More detailed characteristics of the processors are presented in the table:

We will overclock the Ryzen 7 1800X, Ryzen 5 1600, Ryzen 5 1400, Ryzen 3 1300X and Ryzen 3 1200 processors as representatives of solutions with different numbers of threads, and compare them with each other in terms of performance. And the test will be supplemented by an old man in the face of AMD FX-6100.

All OS updates available from Windows Update have been installed. Third-party anti-virus products were not involved, no fine-tuning of the system was made, the size of the paging file was determined by the system itself.

Overclocking Ryzen 7 1800X. Description of the general methodology

The older model of the family has become a participant in several of our comparative tests and in each of them it overclocked. However, the question of the overclocking procedure itself was then touched upon superficially, today I would like to pay more attention to it. In addition, any of the processors based on the Zen architecture will be overclocked according to a similar principle.

We used an instance with a UA 1705SUT batch (hereinafter, for comparison, a snapshot of the FX-6100 processor is shown):

First, let’s remember how the representative of the Ryzen 7 line behaves with the initial system settings. In idle, the frequency is 2.2 GHz when the voltage is less than 0.5 V:

For older motherboards where the X370 hub is soldered, a special CPU operation mode has been prepared, when the frequency can be maximized due to XFR technology, however, I saw it in action on our test MSI B350 Gaming Pro Carbon, which uses not X370 at all, but B350. The load was created by a single-threaded Super PI 1.5 XS, while the voltage increased to 1.438 V (according to the processor sensor, which in AIDA64 is called CPU VDD). The frequency grew up to 4.1 GHz:

With a full-fledged, multi-threaded load, it was no longer so high — growth stopped at 3.7 GHz, the voltage did not exceed 1.219 V. The test task was the “1024M” scenario from wPrime 2.10:

As you can see, the voltage level of 1.45 V is included in the operating scheme by the manufacturer, therefore, during overclocking, a slight excess should not significantly «harm» the processor. An important aspect that requires attention is the behavior of the voltage regulator on the board. There is a separate review for our bench motherboard, where this issue can be studied in detail, I only state a noticeable decrease in CPU VDD (according to AIDA64) against the background of the values ​​​​set in UEFI and formed on the VRM by the board itself. In this case, I will perceive the “useful” voltage as critical, and not the one located “on the outskirts” of the processor.

CPU overclocking can be done in more than one way, but for a quick search for frequency limits, AMD’s proprietary software called Ryzen Master is quite suitable. In my opinion, it would be appropriate to start testing with a frequency of 3700 MHz and a voltage of 1.4 V. For some users, even this level may seem redundant, here everyone has the right to make their own decision, but today, without resorting to compromises, we will deal with maximum overclocking ( for air cooling).

Running wPrime 2.10 with the 1024M profile created a load on both the processor itself and the VRM system on the motherboard. The step of changing the processor frequency is 25 MHz, which is rather small. You can increase the final frequency every few seconds by moving between the cell with the new value and the Apply button. Relatively stable, for this section of experiments, the system will be considered by me as long as it retains its performance. As a rule, a failure in its operation leads to a reboot, so you need to remember the mark (new, when it happened, or old, when there were no problems yet).

For our board, you should also take into account the difference between the set and operating voltage on the processor, the following picture was typical for the starting test mode: with maximum LLC, 1.416 V formed on the VRM, and only 1.356 V reached the processor. For NB, I chose 0.9 V, it’s a little over the stock mark.

So, when the first mark is found, you can increase the tension and move on. In our sample, the “stable” result of the first cycle turned out to be 4.1 GHz. Let’s make an increase of 0.1 V, thereby reaching the theoretical 1.5 V. Let’s check how the system reacted to this increase by running the same wPrime. We see that 1.528 V is formed on the VRM, and 1.45 V is valid for the processor (I indicate the maximum marks as psychologically important in this part of the measurements):

We continue, with an increased supply voltage, we managed to move up to 4150 MHz. Is 50 MHz worth it? Let everyone decide for himself. For the sake of curiosity, I decided to go even further, slightly exceeding the 1.5 V threshold (for UEFI), adding another 0.025 V to them. Again, we check the current levels. For the stabilizer, it grew to 1.552 V, while the processor had only 1.475 V at its disposal:

Continuing the tests, it turned out to fix the performance of a PC with an effective CPU frequency of 4.2 GHz. However, this mark is far from stable, but only an outlet for benchmarking enthusiasts. However, the frequency potential of our specimen has been studied, we can safely stop at a frequent 4.1 GHz. To facilitate the perception of information, the figures obtained are summarized in a small table:

Our processor had no problems when tested at 4.1 GHz and 1.45 V, but it was under light load. To consolidate, I brought in a more “heavy” one — x265 HD Benchmark.

Short tests allowed me to reduce the level to 1.4875 V set in UEFI, on the CPU the fixed mark was 1.438 V. We are not talking about CPU overheating even with an inexpensive cooler, because the temperature did not exceed 80 degrees.

The next step is overclocking the RAM. The question is acute, as for the AM4 platform, but today — in the coming 2018 — almost all chips (from various manufacturers) can already cross the 3000 MHz mark, however, the undisputed leader of recommendations is a set containing Samsung B-die chips. For our test, the kit will be based on a cheaper and very common E-die revision, it is dual-ranked, which is also considered appropriate for a Ryzen CPU. First you need to check the performance of the system with the XMP profile, the set of delays is determined by the manufacturer for a reason, and the frequency formula can often be workable. Further development of events has many scenarios, but I will describe our case. The system was perfectly capable of running XMP circuitry at 1.35V on the modules. Further experiments (to increase the frequency) were very difficult. Having tested all the firmware that have marks for DRAM greater than 3200 MHz (these are only later versions of UEFI, in the early versions “3200” is the maximum), I settled on UEFI 1.50. With it, our memory ran at 3333 MHz, but required stabilization, while with the latest version, at the time of testing (1.60), there were already problems even getting into the UEFI environment. The voltage on the modules did not exceed 1.5 V, therefore, perhaps, this was precisely the limiting factor (here we are faced with another psychological barrier, but it is also important that this level is the maximum for the motherboard model used). The result of experiments with the main group of delays was the following scheme, which we used for all Ryzen processors in this review (here I confirm its performance for each processor that took part in our tests):

The search for memory frequency limits took place with the initial settings for the processor, and now it’s time to combine them in order to achieve the maximum increase in PC performance. The high frequency of DRAM was not slow to affect the greater load of the processor, so its operation scheme had to be adjusted, namely, the frequency dropped to 4050 MHz at the same voltage level. But he worked properly at 4.1 GHz, but with a slow memory.

Here I had to be a bit cunning, because all our test applications worked without issues, but others, specializing specifically in identifying instabilities in work, could sooner or later declare an error in the calculations. It would be appropriate to store it not only in the UEFI environment, but somewhere else on removable media. That is, the selected mode has a slight touch of the benchmarking approach, but, with a strong desire, it could be stabilized by choosing a larger effective value for the CPU and adjusting the minor memory delays. The second case from Aerocool’s top Project 7 series is called the C0 Pro, and it differs from the previously reviewed C1 in a much more restrained design and smaller dimensions. However, this model also has its own “chip”, which consists in glass side panels on both sides and the presence of three RGB fans, an RGB LED strip on the front panel and a controller hub for all of the above. Along the perimeter of the grille there is a strip of LED illumination made of white translucent plastic. The Aerocool logo is pasted on the bottom. Enermax power supplies are not frequent guests on the pages of our site, so the new device that got to the test aroused a certain interest in us — after all, more than five years have passed since the last meeting with them. The Taiwanese company, along with Sea Sonic, has always been distinguished by advanced developments in its solutions and set the tone for other manufacturers. Enermax was one of the first to use a resonant converter and a synchronous rectifier in its energy efficient power supplies, but now these developments can be found even in affordable devices.

The tested model belongs to the Revolution Duo series and has an original, by today’s standards, cooling design using two fans. A similar scheme was popular in the past decade with passive PFC power supplies, but with the transition to active power factor correction and the advent of 120 mm turntables, it faded to nothing.

The unit also has an active PFC and is designed to operate over a wide line voltage range. Of the declared protections, there are the following: from increased and decreased output voltage, from overload and short circuit, from mains voltage surges. There is an adjustment of the fan speed depending on the temperature inside the PSU.

Under the cover, we see a circuit that has already become a classic for “gold” devices based on a resonant converter in the high-voltage part and a synchronous rectifier in the low-voltage part. The Yue-Lin Electrical Technology platform is used.

The input capacitance is only 330 uF with an operating voltage of 400 V. Like all the electrolytic capacitors in the block, it is made by Teapo, which was not previously typical for Enermax. There are solid capacitances in the DC/DC converter zone.

Our high expectations regarding the quality of the soldering did not come true — if earlier the Taiwanese vendor was famous for the abundant amount of flux that was not washed off, then here, in addition to it, there are areas with missing varnish and manual intervention after the assembly line is visible.

Two fans are used to cool the ERD700AWL-F: a 100mm ED1002512L-OA intake fan and an 80mm ED0801512L-OA exhaust fan. Both are based on a magnetically suspended sleeve and are designed for a duty cycle of 160,000 hours. The connection is two-pin — finally, there are no proprietary connectors that were previously used, when in the event of a fan failure it would be difficult to replace it.

When the system is idle in automatic mode (minimum knob position), the 100mm fan spins at 593rpm, while the 80mm fan spins at 1195rpm. The noise level is quite comfortable. With an increase in load, the speed of the “turntables” increases to a maximum of 1100/2145 rpm, while there is no longer talk of silence. If you use manual adjustment, then the fan speed is about 1216–1234 and 2157–2185 rpm for the supply and exhaust, respectively.

Test Methodology

It is difficult to carry out full testing without an appropriate stand, so the power supplies were tested using a conventional system assembled from the following components:

  • processor: Intel Core i7-6700K (4.0@4.5 GHz);
  • motherboard: ASUS Maximus VIII Formula (Intel Z170);
  • Cooler: Prolimatech Megahalems;
  • RAM: HyperX HX430C15PB3K2/16 (2×8 GB, DDR4-3000, 15-16-16-35-1T);
  • video cards: GeForce GTX 1080;
  • drive: Kingston SSDNow UV400 240GB (240 GB, SATA 6Gb/s).

Testing was carried out in the Windows 10 x64 environment on an open stand. To create a gaming load on the system, the Valley benchmark was used with maximum graphics quality, and for additional load, LinX 0.6.7 was launched in parallel.

Also, for maximum load, the following system was assembled:

  • processor: Intel Core i7-975 (3.33@4.02 GHz, Bclk 175 MHz);
  • motherboard: ASUS P6T7 WS SuperComputer (Intel X58);
  • cooler: Noctua NH-D14;
  • RAM: Kingston KHX2000C8D3T1K3/6GX (3×2 GB, DDR3-2000@1750, 8-8-8-24);
  • video cards: ASUS ENGTX295/2DI/1792MD3/A and Inno3D GeForce GTX 295 Platinum Edition (GeForce GTX 295);
  • hard disk: Samsung HD502HJ (500 GB, 7200 rpm, SATA-II).

Here testing was carried out in the Windows 7 x64 HP environment on an open stand. To create a load on the system, the Tropics benchmark was used with activated anti-aliasing level 2x and anisotropic filtering 16x with LinX running with a 1280 MB task, while the video adapters worked in SLI mode. Another test was carried out with the launch of the OCCT v3.1.0 utility in full screen mode with a resolution of 1024×768, also in SLI mode.

To measure the total power consumption of the system, the Seasonic Power Angel was used, which can also measure the power factor, voltage and frequency in the network, the consumed current and the amount of energy spent per unit of time. Net power consumption calculated based on 80 Plus certification — i.e. possible efficiency of the device. Errors in such calculations can be 5%. The voltages were checked with a UNI-T UT70D digital multimeter.

In addition, we decided to slightly expand testing by taking temperature readings inside the power supply, fan speed.

The temperature was measured using the Scythe Kaze Master Pro panel, the sensors of which were located on the radiators inside the block and at a distance of 1 cm in front of the fan (#1) and behind the outer wall (#2).

For fan speed results, a UNI-T UT372 non-contact tachometer was used. The maximum speed was fixed for each of the power supply testing modes.

It should be borne in mind that such a technique at this stage is far from ideal and will be supplemented and changed as it is used.

The reviewed power supply ERD700AWL-F of the Revolution DUO series can be described as an affordable solution from a well-known manufacturer, which, with comparable quality and price, has much better characteristics than products from second- or third-tier companies. A sufficient length of cables will not become a stumbling block when assembling in a large case, and the potential of the device will allow you to power a powerful gaming PC even with a couple of video cards. The original cooling system is unlikely to surprise lovers of silence, but to some extent it can improve the temperature regime of a large number of drives located under the casing along with the power supply. And only demanding users will prefer models of a higher class, of which Enermax itself and other manufacturers abound.

GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition

Standard design video adapter from NVIDIA. Instead of the usual “turbine”, the new GeForce received cooling with a larger radiator and two fans. The heart of the graphics card is the TU102 GPU with 4352 stream processors, 272 texture units, 544 tensor units and 68 RT cores. The minimum core frequencies for models in this series are as follows: the base value is 1350 MHz, the average Boost Clock is 1545 MHz. For Founders Edition, this combination of frequencies is 1350/1635 MHz. Real frequencies in game mode can approach 1700 MHz. On board the video card is 11 GB of a new type of GDDR6 memory with an effective frequency of 14000 MHz.

GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition

This graphics card is being replaced by the ASUS DUAL-RTX2080-O8G, a model with identical frequency response and similar thermal performance.

GeForce RTX 2070 Founders Edition

The GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card comes in two versions as we had different levels of models in stock. Founders Edition replaces ASUS DUAL-RTX2070-O8G with identical frequency response.

This series is represented by the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Gaming X 8G, but the frequencies are lowered to match the performance level of the reference versions.

The standard specification calls for a base value of 1607 MHz with a Boost Clock of 1733 MHz, the memory operates at an effective frequency of 10000 MHz on a 256-bit bus. The MSI frequencies were reduced so that the average Boost value was around 1750 MHz to match the characteristics of simple video cards in this series.

Radeon RX Vega 64

The family of AMD graphics accelerators is represented by the reference Radeon RX Vega 64 air-cooled. The other day the new Radeon VII came out, but it is still far from the status of a mass product. I had to operate with what is available at the time of testing. We will devote future reviews to the confrontation between Radeon VII and GeForce RTX.
