A couple of months ago, the AMD processor lineup was replenished with new budget processors — Ryzen 3 3100 and Ryzen 3 3300X. Despite the presence of four cores with SMT support, in some tasks they are superior to the 6-core models of the previous generation. This article is devoted to experiments and analysis of the potential of new products, as well as their comparison with past generations of Ryzen and FX in benchmarks and games.

  • FX-6350: default settings, 1866 MHz memory, timings CL9-9-9-24-1T;
  • OC FX-6350: frequency 5.1 GHz, memory 2200 MHz, timings CL11-11-11-30-1T, NB and HT — 2.6 GHz;
  • Ryzen 3 3100: stock settings, 3200 MHz memory, JEDEC timings;
  • OC Ryzen 3 3100: 4.5GHz, FCLK=1867MHz, 3733MHz memory, CL14-16-14-28-1T timings;

The temperature in the room was 22–25 degrees Celsius. The power consumption of the platform was measured using the Feron TM55 energy meter for 10 minutes in load mode (LinX AMD Edition run) and idle. Fan speed control is automatic. The frequency potential was studied in voltage steps of 0.025 V, the stability of the system was checked by a complex of loads in the form of mining on the RandomX algorithm, running LinX (problem size 28432, 10 iterations), as well as passing the HWBot x265 2.2 Benchmark on the 4k preset. The junior processor uses two CCX half (two physical cores and 8 MB L3 cache each), while the older one uses one CCX fully (four physical cores and 16 MB L3 cache), and the second CCX is disabled.

Both processors ran at identical settings. The frequency was 4000 MHz, the memory worked at 3600 MHz with timings CL18-18-18-39-1T, FCLK was 1800 MHz. Energy saving technologies and consumption limits removed (1000W/4096A).

The AMD B450 chipset can easily handle the same settings from the AMD X570, however, when it comes to XOC, the AMD B450 puts a lot of spokes in conquering the Zen 2 processor. successful start if FCLK fails. When it is possible to obtain level values ​​of 1800–1900 MHz in air or water, then at the turn of these same -40 degrees, the frequency must be kept in the region of 1400–1500 MHz. The funny thing is that with Zen / Zen + you can start without problems even at -100 degrees. The next point is RAM. The cold helps old architectures in conquering higher frequencies / compressing timings, the same is true on the X570 + Zen 2 bundle, but this is somehow not observed on the B450 + Zen 2, although this did not prevent us from easily taking the frequency of 5000 MHz on DDR4. Ryzen 3 3100 does not have CB, you can safely freeze it at all -190 degrees. The maximum frequency that we managed to reach is 5850 MHz, in the best traditions of “luck pumped to 1”, the validation file turned out to be broken, so we will assume that the AMD B450 + Ryzen 3 3100 bundle mastered 5.8 GHz on all cores.

Among those who visited me, Matisse is an absolute record at the moment. Ryzen 5 3600 managed to reach 5424 MHz, and the flagship Ryzen 9 3950X only up to 5.4 GHz.
