A few months before Computex, Acer holds an annual next@acer press conference to showcase its new products.

Traditionally, this event takes place in New York, but this time the location was not in the well-known Manhattan, but in another Big Apple borough — the Brooklyn area, moreover, its former industrial zone. Why the choice fell on such a not quite standard place, where guests were also delivered by water taxi, we will tell a little later. In the meantime, let’s take a look at the new products of the lines we already know. By the way, the video version of the presentation is still available and you can watch it if you wish.

The presentation itself, of course, led the «helmsman» of the company Jason Chen (Jason Chen).

After a short introduction about the company’s achievements over the past year, Jason quickly moved on to introducing new devices. Looking ahead, it should be noted that this time the presentation of each of the new products was rather fleeting, from the very beginning of the action it seemed that Acer had prepared some kind of “one more thing” for the ending, which will be devoted to a significant part of the presentation. So it happened, but first things first.

ChromeBook — Devices for Education

Chromebook devices were the first of the presented products. Yes, this class of devices is practically absent in our country, nevertheless, abroad, and in the USA in particular, Chromebooks are widespread, primarily in the field of education. Acer is one of the leaders in the supply of such devices — in total, about 13 million units were sold worldwide, and in the last quarter of last year, Acer took first place in terms of market share among products based on Chrome OS.

As for the devices themselves, the Chromebook 714 and 715 models were demonstrated.

Both of them have an aluminum body and use Intel 8th generation processors. In particular, in various modifications it will be possible to meet Core i3-8130U, i5-8250U, Celeron 3867U or Pentium Gold 4417U chips. The maximum amount of RAM will be up to 16 GB, and the capacity of the internal eMMC storage is 32, 64 or 128 GB. Both models are equipped with a Full HD matrix, diagonals of 15.6 and 14 inches for models 715 and 714, respectively.

The Chromebook 715 weighs 1.8 kg and the 14-inch version is 300 grams lighter. The thickness of the laptop case is almost 18 mm when folded. A notable feature of the 715th model is the presence of a full block of numeric keys. The claimed maximum battery life is up to 12 hours.

Acer TravelMate P60 — long-lasting business laptop

For those who need something more serious, for example, for business tasks, the Taiwanese manufacturer offers the TravelMate line, which this time has been replenished with the TravelMate P6 model.

It is aimed primarily at business travelers. The mass of the device, whose body is made of lightweight magnesium-aluminum alloy, is 1.1 kg, and the thickness of the laptop when folded is less than 17 mm.

The charge of the built-in battery, according to the information from the manufacturer, will last for 20 hours (at least, this result was obtained when testing in the MobileMark 2014 benchmark). Moreover, there is also a fast charging function that allows you to charge the battery up to 50% in 45 minutes, and you will have to wait about two hours for a full charge. All in all, it looks pretty interesting.

The ultrabook is equipped with Intel Whiskey Lake-U processors, the maximum amount of RAM is up to 24 GB, and the SSD is available in 256, 512 or 1024 GB variations. The TravelMate P6 uses a 14-inch IPS-matrix with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels with 72% NTSC color gamut. Of the interesting things, we can also note the presence of a 4G LTE modem and a high-speed Thunderbolt 3 port. The TravelMate P614-51 model should arrive on the shelves of Ukrainian stores in August this year. In conclusion, it is worth saying that this model is certified according to the American military standards MIL-STD 810G2 and 810F, which, among other things, require testing the device for strength, for which it is “dropped” from a height of about 122 cm onto a wooden surface about 5 cm thick located, in turn, on concrete. Moreover, the number of falls of the same instance must be at least 26 times, and each such test involves hitting the device with different parts of the case.

New mainstream series Aspire and «shifter» Spin 3

Of the more “quiet” announcements, you can pay attention, firstly, to the update of the Aspire mainstream line, which includes three varieties — Apire 7, 5 and 3.

The updated flagship of the series, Aspire 7, will be equipped with 8th or 9th generation Intel Core processors (Coffee Lake cores), and some “new” Nvidia GTX graphics will be used as a graphics subsystem. Unfortunately, what exactly this GPU will be is still unknown. There are suggestions that we are talking about the GeForce GTX 1650.

Installable DDR4 RAM is up to 16 GB and can be expanded up to 32 GB using two SO-DIMM slots. The disk subsystem, traditionally for such devices, will be available in a variety of options, and the maximum can be considered a configuration with a 1 TB NVMe SSD in RAID 0 and a hard drive up to 2 TB.

The Aspire 7 features a 15.6-inch Full HD IPS display. The weight of the device is 2.35 kg, and the claimed battery life is up to 7 hours.

It is noteworthy that Acer Aspire 5 and 3 series, in addition to Intel 8th generation U-series processors in combination with an Nvidia Gefroce MX230 mobile graphics accelerator for Apire 5 or MX 250 for Aspire 3, can also be configured with a bunch of Ryzen 3000-series mobile CPUs and discrete Radeon RX 540 adapter. The Apire 5 is available in 14″ and 15.6″ versions, while the Aspire 3 also has a 17.3″ version. Permissions, as well as types of matrices, the whole range will be available — from 1366×768 to 1920×1080.

The maximum amount of installed RAM will be up to 20 GB, the disk subsystem can include an SSD up to 512 GB and a hard drive with a maximum capacity of 2 TB.

Another product that was not talked about from the stage, but it could be found on the showroom floor, was the updated Acer Spin 3 convertible laptop. The device is equipped with 8th generation Intel processors with Whiskey Lake-U architecture. In particular, among the proposed options are Core i7-8565U, i5-8265U, i3-8145U or Pentium Gold 5405U.

8 GB of RAM is soldered on the board, but can be expanded up to 24 GB using a free SO-DIMM slot. The Nvidia MX230 graphics accelerator is responsible for displaying pictures on a 14-inch IPS Full HD display. The screen, of course, is touch, given the form factor of the device with the ability to fully “fold” into a tablet PC.

Data storage is NVMe SSD up to 512 GB and a hard drive with a capacity of up to 1 TB.
