Previously, we looked at several versions of the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti with powerful cooling. These graphics cards offer a great combination of consumer features, but at a higher price. For users with a limited budget, there are easier options, and we will consider one of them in this review. ASUS Turbo GeForce GTX 1070 Ti will cost less than many other video adapters in this series. Its key feature is the presence of a «turbine», which makes the accelerator related to the reference versions of the GeForce GTX series. You don’t expect anything special from such cooling, but it’s interesting to know how the analogue of the standard will perform. Let’s take a look at the design features of the video card, test its nominal and overclocking capabilities, and compare it with the ASUS Cerberus GeForce GTX 1070 Ti and competitors from AMD.

The video card comes in a medium sized box. On the front side there is an image of the device itself. No adapters are traditionally included in the package.

ASUS Turbo uses a classic design. The closed case has a single radial fan that draws air through the heatsink and blows it out of the case. With a small internal space of the case, such a powerful blow can be very useful.

Thickness — standard two slots. Total length is almost 27 cm.

The casing is made in a strict simple design, but a few decorative lines and curves give it its own personality. NVIDIA Founders Edition video cards look more spectacular, but this does not affect performance in any way.

The side inscription ASUS is backlit. There is one eight-pin power connector in the corner.

The video card does not have a reinforcement plate. There are two connectors for switching video cards in SLI mode.

There are five connectors for image output: DVI, two HDMI and two DisplayPort.

When removing the cooler, you can immediately note the general similarity with the reference «turbines», although there are nuances. Immediately striking is the large base at the central radiator. You can also note the unusual yellow color of the thermal pads.

In this case, the black base and GPU heatsink are part of the overall design. The black plate is in contact with the memory chips and power supply transistors.

The main heatsink does not differ in size from the heatsink of the reference GeForce GTX 1080. But NVIDIA cards have an additional section on a black base on the other side of the fan — this is an additional heatsink for better cooling of the VRM. ASUS doesn’t have that. A completely insulated air channel is formed inside the black housing. Air is pumped through it by a radial fan with a diameter of 65 mm. Long service life is claimed due to the use of a ball bearing.

There are three flattened heat pipes at the base of the main heatsink. They are soldered on a large base, and on top of them they carry an array of thin plates.

The printed circuit board is made using Super Alloy Power II technology using high-quality electronic components. The overall design can be called standard for graphics cards based on GPU GP102, although there are some peculiarities.

The graphics processor is powered by six phases, which is at the level of the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1070 Ti, but the wiring and element base of the video cards are different.

ASUS Turbo carries 8 GB of GDDR5 memory on board. Such a volume is typed with Micron 8BA47 D9TCB microcircuits.

Operating frequencies are standard. For the core, a base value of 1607 MHz is declared with a Boost Clock of 1683 MHz, the effective memory frequency reaches 8 GHz.

ASUS TURBO-GTX1070TI-8G

Recall that the value of Boost Clock is a certain average indicator in the load. The video card regulates frequencies over a wide range, keeping temperatures and power within the specified limits. The top-end GeForce GTX 1070 Ti has the temperature factor eliminated, as they do not reach high temperatures. Such video cards may also have some power correction, which will increase the average frequency level. And all previously tested versions of the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti showed Boost above 1800 MHz.

ASUS Turbo on average shows lower values with constantly changing Boost. The overall frequency dynamics of Boost resembles the behavior of reference video cards GeForce GTX 1080, which is quite expected. These are average frequencies below 1800 MHz with drawdowns at some points up to 1750 MHz. Peak Boost reaches 1911 MHz. Below are screenshots of monitoring parameters during Subnautica tests and during a looped 13-minute run of the Final Fantasy XV benchmark.

When operating on an open stand with an indoor temperature of 25 °C, the video card heated up to 82–83 °C. Here we see the achievement of the temperature limit, which determines the reduction in frequencies in the Boost mode. The fan speed reached 2450 rpm, creating a little noise.

Acceleration was standard. The core frequency was raised to 1792 MHz at the base level while increasing the peak Boost to 2088 MHz. The memory was able to work without failures at an effective frequency of 8830 MHz.

ASUS TURBO-GTX1070TI-8G

By increasing the power limit to the maximum, we managed to stabilize Boost at the level of 2000-2025 MHz, although there were drawdowns below these values. This is reflected in the parameter monitoring screenshots in Subnautica and Final Fantasy XV. The fan had to be accelerated almost to the maximum, and this provided up to 77 ° C in almost all games. Only a 13-minute test of Final Fantasy XV brought the core to 79 ° C.

ASUS TURBO-GTX1070TI-8GASUS TURBO-GTX1070TI-8G

Based on the results, it can be seen that the average Boost frequencies are slightly lower than the level provided by the top ASUS cards. And maintaining stability in this mode is ensured only in noisy mode.
