We recently reviewed the ASUS ROG Strix Fusion 500 gaming headphones, which, with their original appearance and good sound quality, turned out to be a very expensive pleasure for computer gamers. Now it’s the turn of another model from this series — ROG Strix Fusion 300.

ASUS ROG Strix Fusion 300

The headset was deprived of some of the features of the older version, but the price tag has become much nicer. But anyway, this is ASUS, this is ROG and this is Strix, so you can’t hope for a budget price. Headphones stand out with an aggressive design, virtual 7.1 sound and are focused on connecting to a large number of devices.

Inside the box: cardboard inserts, plastic case, headphones themselves, ROG Hybrid interchangeable fabric ear pads, two wires wrapped in memory foam nylon braid (USB cable 2 meters and cable with 3.5 mm plugs 1.5 meters) and manual user.

Appearance

ROG Strix Fusion 300 are massive monitor headphones crafted from matte, grainy plastic. The cups have graphite-colored inserts made of smooth material.

In the older model, this part is mirrored and scratched, but here you don’t have to worry about it and put it on the table with the outer side down without any problems.

The rocker of the headset is durable, with a metal base, ten divisions on one side and the branded pattern of the ROG series on the other.

The inside of the headband has a fabric lining with soft foam stuffed inside. On the sides are inserts with the letters «L» and «R».

The outer side of the rocker is made of the same matte corrugated plastic. On the side and bottom you can see the inscription Republic of Gamers.

Closed cups rotate 90 degrees and also move in a vertical plane. They fit comfortably around the neck and can easily be folded into a bag or backpack. Along the edges of the cups there is a stylized cutout with translucent plastic inserts.

The left cup hides a miniature unidirectional microphone. When hidden, it is not active by default and turns on on click when omitted. The leg is flexible, so that the user can easily choose the optimal shape for himself.

There is also a virtual 7.1 mode start button and a microUSB port. The touch panel for volume control and song switching, as in the ROG Strix Fusion 500, is not found here.

On the right cup placed a standard 3.5 mm audio jack. Through it, the headset connects to any other device, be it a tablet, console or smartphone.

Under the soft eco-leather ear cushions, branded 50 mm ASUS Essence speakers with neodymium magnets are hidden.

Ergonomics and ease of use

ASUS ROG Strix Fusion 300 are large headphones with a wide headband. With a mass of 360 grams, they sit perfectly on the head and do not press anywhere. During the test of the older model ROG Strix Fusion 500, at first they put a lot of pressure on the ears and only then began to feel like family. Here, everything is fine right away — in the “sealed” chamber, the ears do not feel discomfort from being in the headphones for a long time.

The headset is well assembled, does not creak, does not play, the turning mechanisms are strong, silent, the cups turn easily and without problems.

In leatherette ear cushions, the sounds of the outside world are cut off almost completely. True, in the heat, the ears sweat in them, which means it is better to put the fabric version, but in this case the audibility of the environment will become stronger.

Matte corrugated plastic does not collect fingerprints and is not afraid of scratches. The same applies to graphite inserts on the sides. But such material perfectly collects dust and it is clearly visible on the headset.

I didn’t think it would happen, but after using the ROG Strix Fusion 500, I really miss the touchpad. It seemed like a pointless feature for poseurs, but hands reach out to make it quieter or louder with the touch of a finger. You quickly get used to good things, even if these are “show-offs for visitors”.

The virtual 7.1 power button is still inconvenient and you often touch it with your fingers when you take off or put on the headset. Fortunately, there is a light indicator, so you can quickly understand whether it is pressed or not.

ROG Strix Fusion 300 makes it easy to use different devices: connect a USB cable and sit at a PC, switch to a wire with a 3.5 mm audio input, take a smartphone and sit comfortably on a chair or sofa, or connect headphones to Dual Shock and launch PlayStation four.

ASUS ROG Strix Fusion 300 works with the native Aura app.

But this headset has an exclusively red backlight, so only the brightness or glow style (static light or “breathing”) is configured in the program.

sound impressions

Like the ROG Strix Fusion 500, the younger version stands out with powerful bass that interrupts other frequencies, a dull mids and an almost complete absence of highs. Headphones are great for gaming, they are convenient to play shooters and action games where you can hear every sound of the environment or the steps of a sneaking enemy.

But for music, ROG Strix Fusion 300 is almost not suitable, unless you are a fan of dance styles. But when using a cable with a mini-jack, music sounds much better on a smartphone, tablet and console. Although for users who do not care about the perfect sound, this headset is quite suitable for all musical directions. The main thing is more bottoms, and there are plenty of the latter in this model.

Another “feature” not for everyone is virtual 7.1 sound. It’s really fun to play shooters with this effect when enemy positioning is important, but in other cases, an echo is simply superimposed on the sound, and the audible frequency range drops sharply to zero. It is not suitable for watching videos, movies or series. All because of the same extremely annoying echo.

ASUS ROG Strix Fusion 300

The sound from the microphone is normal in quality, but very specific. Given the possibility of using the headset at various tournaments, where someone is constantly yelling and making it difficult to hear teammates, it has a powerful noise suppressor. The environment here is really inaudible. At all. But because of this, the voice is greatly distorted, and the sound itself is very muffled, which makes the speaker look like an alien or a robot.

Results

ASUS ROG Strix Fusion 300 is a stylish, futuristic and relatively inexpensive (as for the ASUS ROG series) gaming headset with simplified backlighting, practical housing material and many connection options. Headphones are suitable for fans of shooters and novice e-sports players, but are strongly not recommended for music fans who know a lot about sound. If the ROG Strix Fusion 500 is stuffed with unnecessary features for you, they are expensive, but you like it outwardly, then pay attention to the ROG Strix Fusion 300.
