The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti maintains its leadership among mainstream gaming graphics cards by offering the highest performance available today. And judging by the preliminary data on upcoming AMD Vega solutions, this situation will change only after the launch of the next generation of GeForce graphics accelerators. Previously, we got acquainted with the standard version of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and a couple of non-reference models with improved cooling. Next in line is another such video card, which is equipped with a powerful cooler and operates at higher frequencies. Let’s see what the Inno3D iChill GeForce GTX 1080 Ti X3 Ultra (C108T3-1SDN-Q6MNX) adapter is capable of, what are its temperature and noise characteristics and how good is overclocking.

Large video card. The length reaches 30 cm, and a large cooling system occupies two and a half expansion slots.

Visually, the iChill GeForce GTX 1080 Ti X3 Ultra resembles the iChill GeForce GTX 1060 X3, only the casing is painted black. The shroud itself is so large that it partially covers all three fans. In the case of the GeForce GTX 1060, this was not critical due to the low TDP. But in this case, such an impractical approach can have more tangible negative consequences. In older iChill video cards, the casing consisted of separate removable elements that were easily dismantled without disassembling the cooling. Now this is impossible, so you have to put up with extra «armor».

On the side of the case there is a window with a logo.

Any high-end product now comes with a backlight, and this card is no exception. In working condition, the fans are illuminated by white LEDs.

There is also a variable illumination of the iChill side logo, where the color indicates the load. With a blue glow, the video card works in a simple 2D mode, with a green one — a light load, with a red one, it already has a maximum 3D load.

The reverse side of the board is protected by a metal plate.

On the rear panel there are five connectors for displaying the image. A DVI port is added to the standard set of three DisplayPorts and one HDMI, which the reference GeForce GTX 1080 Ti does not have.

Let’s take a closer look at the cooling system. A two-section radiator is hidden under the casing. One section has a large base for contact with the GPU, the other section has a contact pad for the VRM power elements.

The design of the radiator as a whole resembles the iChill GeForce GTX 1060 X3 cooler, but with some changes — a larger base, the heat pipes are oriented differently. Of the five tubes, four now pierce the side section, which will improve the cooling of the VRM block. Simple flat plates without «pimples» are also used.

A casing with fans is put on top of the radiator, it clings to the edges with latches. There are no additional mounting frames, i.e. no unnecessary airflow obstruction.

Three 90mm Colorful CF-12915S fans are responsible for airflow. The plastic casing is encased in metal «armor», which we never managed to remove. At the same time, even the process of putting this case on a radiator is fraught with problems due to the high rigidity of the metal elements. In the old Inno3D iChill video cards, it was much better, although they resembled a designer, everything could be carefully untwisted and reassembled.

For memory chips, a separate radiator is provided in the form of a simple plate.

The manufacturer did not make any changes to the PCB design. This model has a standard reference PCB design.

The GPU power subsystem has seven phases with two transistors per channel. GDDR5X memory is powered by two phases.

The heart of the graphics card is the GP102-350-K1-A1 processor with 3584 active stream processors.

The total memory is 11 GB, which is typed in the same number of Micron chips.

Inno3D iChill GeForce GTX 1080 Ti X3 Ultra runs at higher clock speeds. The base core frequency is 1607 MHz with the declared Boost Clock of 1721 MHz, the effective memory frequency is equivalent to 11404 MHz. It is worth noting that many top GeForce GTX 1080 Ti have lower initial specifications and almost all of them do without factory memory overclocking.

The actual Boost frequency was also quite high. In Tom Clancy’s The Division, at 4K resolution, the core worked at frequencies of 1898-1911 MHz, and in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided they were already close to 1924 MHz. This is higher than the initial frequencies of the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X 11G. At such high frequencies, the core temperature reached 73–75 °C. This is higher than the temperatures of the same MSI Gaming X, but this time the tests took place under more severe conditions with an indoor temperature of 26 ° C.

Fans unwind up to 1500 rpm, which is at the level of 90% of their maximum. The noise was small.

The overclocking results of this video card were close to those of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition. The core was overclocked to 1637 MHz at the base frequency and real Boost above 2 GHz. The memory was overclocked to 11924 MHz, which is even slightly less than the previously tested cards, but not significantly.

Inno3D iChill GeForce GTX 1080 Ti X3 Ultra

In Tom Clancy’s The Division’s heavy test at ultra-high 4K resolution, the average core frequency was close to 2000 MHz with short-term peaks up to 2063 MHz.

Inno3D iChill GeForce GTX 1080 Ti X3 Ultra

In some games, the core frequency was closer to the level of 2025 MHz.

Inno3D iChill GeForce GTX 1080 Ti X3 Ultra

Pay attention to small deviations from the specified values according to the monitoring schedule. This is possible due to a certain power reserve. The previously tested reference showed higher frequency variability even with the maximum increase in the power limit, and during overclocking in the heaviest games, drawdowns to 1962-1975 MHz were observed with a peak value of up to 2050 MHz. That is, the real performance of Inno3D iChill should be higher.
